Compared to the changes in the GOP, over the last 80 years, the flavor hasn’t changed much for Democrats. (See blog two).Their basic democratic concepts are to support the average citizen and the unions along with the small farmers. Also, their goal is to preserve the environment along with individual freedoms such as civil rights, religious freedom, sexual orientation, women’s rights.
In my book, NautiGurl, I assert that, in theory, politics is love in action at the service level.
And what most people fail to understand is that there are indeed many great and talented people in the service of our country from each party.
Then, pollution starts with the need to raise funds for a campaign;and, they have to ‘sleep with the devil’ and raise funds from the ‘big kids’. The challenge is how to keep this underground sewer line from overflowing too often?
Thirty years ago when a congressperson was elected and went to his or her first orientation, each was encouraged to spend time in their district; and, little time was spent on fund raising. Today, it is well known, that each congressperson must spend six hours per day dialing for dollars.
Issues used to be debated, now advertising replaces the debate. Think back to the Lincoln-Douglas debates of 1858. Then, in the 1860 election, there was virtually no campaigning after the conventions. What happened? The advertising world stole the show.
